Plans to build a casino in the Scottish town of Stranraer are still going ahead, according to officials, despite doubts over proposals for a casino in Manchester.

Some 16 casino developments are likely to still go-ahead, even though plans for a super-casino located in Manchester are in doubt.

"We have received notification from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport of the intention to proceed with eight large and eight small casinos - including a small casino at Stranraer - although we understand that no final decision has been made," a Scottish government spokesperson told the BBC.

Manchester was chosen to be the location for the super-casino early in 2007, but Gordon Brown announced he would be reviewing the plans when he became prime minister later in the year.

The fate of the planned development is expected to be announced in the next few weeks. As well as Stranraer, other towns including Luton, Torbay and Swansea are planning smaller casinos.
