After participating in this summer’s Big One For One Drop charity event, English professional poker player Sam Trickett has mutually agreed to end his sponsorship agreement with the online betting exchange at Matchbook.com.
Billed as one of the richest poker games in the history of the sport, the three-day no-limit Texas hold’em Big One For One Drop event took place as part of this summer’s 43rd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament series in Las Vegas and featured a buy-in of one million dollars.
Nottinghamshire-born Trickett headlined a stable of elite poker players sponsored by Matchbook.com that also included Roberto Romanello and James Akenhead and took second place in the Big One For One Drop, which took place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino from July 1 to 3, to bank over ten million dollars in cash and become Europe’s all-time money winner.
“We have long believed that Sam is one of the best poker players in the world and his success over the last two years is well deserved,” read a statement from Matchbook.com.
“We have been honoured to have Sam as the face of the Matchbook Poker team in which his results were nothing short of phenomenal. Sam is a huge asset for any brand and we fully expect him to secure a sponsorship deal with one of the biggest dedicated poker sites around.
“Our sponsorship strategy with Sam has always been targeted towards the Big One For One Drop event. While we do expect to maintain an interest in poker moving forward through a variety of poker markets for popular European and worldwide events, Matchbook now looks to focus on its core business as a sportsbetting exchange.”
Matchbook.com stated that it offered ‘a variety of poker betting markets’ during this summer’s WSOP and was ‘keen to establish a brand presence among the players and community’. The domain said that it also produced a documentary covering Trickett’s involvement in the Big One For One Drop tournament that is set to be shown in the UK later on this year followed ‘soon after’ by a version available online.
“I’m extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to compete in the biggest tournament in this history of poker and it was an experience that will live for me forever,” said Trickett.
“It’s been a lot of fun filming this and I’m looking forward to seeing the outcome myself.”
